While progressive house is a global movement, Sri Lanka is a key country for it. We began our love affair with Sri Lankan artists with Dimuth K, now a Canadian resident, and his storming remix of Social Illusion. We continue this love by welcoming Vihanga to the label with a two track EP.
Let’s get to know him more.
DD: Vihanga, it is a pleasure to welcome you to the Deep Down family. For readers who don’t know you yet, can you give as an introduction to yourself and tell us how you got into production?
V: Hi! My name is Vihanga and I’m super happy to be part of the Deep Down family. In Sri Lanka there are so many great progressive house artists. I fell in love with their music and how they perform and I started to study their sounds and everything. This how I first started making music.
DD: How has your sound developed and evolved over time? How do you describe your sound?
V: I’m still learning about production and sound design, but I like to make my sound unique and I’m trying new things that I feel are not copying anyone’s sound. I want people to remember that my sound and style is different than others.
DD: Progressive house is really big in Sri Lanka. Can you tell us a bit about the scene there and about who your biggest influences are?
V: There are huge artists like Subandrio, Dimuth K, Nishan Lee, Kyotto, Noiyse Project and many more. I’m always listening to their music and I’m getting feedback from some of them. It’s helped me so much and that’s how I learned.
DD: Can you tell us a bit about your studio setup? Do you produce ‘in the box’ or do you use a lot of outboard gear?
V: My setup is really a bedroom studio set up at this moment. I want to upgrade but with this country’s situation it’s really hard for me.
DD: Could you tell us more about the inspiration behind the two tracks you released with us and how you produced them?
V: I started producing these two tracks a while ago. I kept adding things and tried to make it sound interesting and finally got the rhythm going.
DD: What’s next for you? What can we expect from Vihanga in 2022?
I have some unreleased tracks and I’ll try to release them in the near future. And I want to say that this EP really helped me to reach more people and get so much beautiful feedback. So I want to thank the Deep Down family for this opportunity. And I hope to work with them in the future. Thanks
